The Medium Review offers an intimate, high-impact experience with professionals across the field of photography—designed to help artists build connections that can genuinely move a career forward.

Meet with museum curators, gallery owners, and art directors spanning the spectrum of fine art photography, and leave with insight, encouragement, and real relationships—not just feedback.

What you’ll get

  • A minimum of 4 one-on-one reviews

  • 20 minutes per review (in-person)

  • A placement process that prioritizes your choices: we proudly schedule the majority of each photographer’s top review picks.

First come, first serve: Artists are given their choice of reviewers based on order of registration.

Each review is a chance to:

  • Share your work in a focused setting

  • Learn what reviewers are actively looking for (and what’s coming up next)

  • Build relationships that can lead to exhibitions, publications, and future opportunities

Open Portfolio Walk

All registered reviewees are invited to participate in the Friday night Portfolio Walk, where photographers table their work and share it with every reviewer, plus the public. It’s a fast, lively way to get your work seen widely—before your one-on-one meetings even begin.

New in 2026: Golden Ticket Option

This year we’re introducing an exciting new option to make the review more accessible and affordable:

Golden Ticket Portfolio Walk Option

$45 (or $39 for Medium Photo members)
Register for a seat at the Portfolio Walk Friday night to show your work—and here’s the twist:

Each reviewer will award one Golden Ticket to a photographer of their choice.
A Golden Ticket is an invitation to a complimentary portfolio review with that reviewer on Saturday.

This option is designed to expand access while keeping the experience high-quality, relationship-driven, and fun.

A locally rooted review (with real long-term impact)

In past years, portfolio reviews have been multi-day, national affairs. The 2026 Medium Review is intentionally locally focused—with reviewers who are deeply connected to the San Diego/Tijuana region and its institutions.

That means:

  • More opportunities for ongoing relationships, not one-off meetings

  • Stronger alignment with local exhibitions, publishing, and community networks

  • A more affordable, condensed format that maintains the quality Medium is known for

2026 Reviewers

We invite reviewers from across the field of photography to meet with artists for one-on-one conversations about their work—and how their organization can offer meaningful support.

Our criteria is simple: we select individuals who are actively engaged in fine art photography and have a track record of supporting artists through exhibitions, publications, and public-facing opportunities.

Second Sight Award

Reviewers nominate an artist they met with whose work—and ability to speak about their work—resonated strongly. One artist is selected through reviewer nominations to receive the Second Sight Award.

The award recipient:

  • Is invited to present the Second Sight Lecture at the 2027 Medium Festival of Photography

  • Participates in a collectors event for Medium Photo supporters of Group f.16

Previous Second Sight Award recipients include:
David Emitt Adams (2013), Kurt Simonson (2014), Ellen Garvens (2015), Leonard Suryajaya (2016), Justyna Badach (2017), Robert Calafiore (2018), Mariel Miranda (2019), Fatemeh Baigmoradi (2021), Amanda Marchand (2022), Anh-Thuy Nguyen (2023), Anna Berenice Garner (2024).
